Hmm, when was this book written? To be sure the Borgias don't deserve all of their reputation (and even the Jeremy Irons TV show does show some positive aspects, it's not all bad), particularly Lucrezia (as Sarah Bradford notes in her bio of Lucrezia). And of course a lot of people were corrupt back then, so it's hard to single them out in particular. They were definitely targets of slander and prejudice as Spaniards in particular. Although I think Meyer stating unequivocally that Cesare wasn't in love with his sister is a bit silly. The story came about in part because of how unusually close they were, and examples like Cesare detouring many miles to go to Lucrezia's bedside and comfort her when she was sick once, etc. I don't think it was necessarily true they were incestuous, but there was a close bond there to be sure (kind of like how we cannot know for sure that Hamilton and Laurens actually boned, but we know they were close ( ... )
