I really agree. The excavation itself was shameful. Poor Richard.

I do think they made too much of a tourist attraction of the excavation, but I'm not sorry it happened. I just wish Leicester weren't so blatantly cashing in on the whole thing - but I suppose with the level of public interest it was inevitable...

I was referring to the excavation itself and the lies surrounding all that hoopla. PLUS...the pickaxe in the skull....was unforgivable. I definitely think he needed to be moved.

I was one of those who queued. For two and a half hours on Tuesday night.
It was totally worth it.
However, I have to say I was disappointed that they really weren't prepared for the sheer number of people who turned up. The ladies in front of us had queued the night before only for the cathedral to close before they got to the front.

The number of roses left on the statue and on the lawn at the front of the cathedral was astounding.

People's responses to Richard III have been what's touched me the most. But the official response, the ceremonial response I just found deeply disappointing.

Did you watch the service, or any of the procession on Sunday? What did you think?

I didn't think much of the TV synopsis on channel 4, I just wanted to watch the lowering etc. But there were loads of talking head interviews and stuff.

Ah well. It's done now and I can go down and see the stone when I've a free moment.

People really don't honour the dead and historical figures as they should.

I'm one of those who think he should have been buried in either York or Westminster Abbey, since he was the King, after all. But, I admit that I haven't been paying much attention to the burial itself. I knew it was coming up, but not when. From your description, it does sound as if it should have been better. And yes, more of the current royal family should have been in attendance, even if there is no DNA shared relationship between them, he was still a ruling monarch in a time when the monarch actually ruled, as opposed to being just a ceremonial figurehead.

I agree. This is the body of a king, after all - a crowned and anointed English monarch, regardless of what you think of his historical reputation. I think the ceremony and respect should be no different to if any current member of the royal family died. He didn't get that respect when he first died, he should have been entitled to it this time around.
