ciaimpala asked: 'five books you would recommend everyone should read'

If you'd asked me five songs or five movies or five characters, I would probably have been paralysed by indecision. But five books I can answer! So, in no particular order:

This is one of those books that people either seem to utterly ( Read more... )

so great! I've actually only read one of these (Jane Eyre-one of my favorites too, and re-read many times) so now I have some books to look out for!

My advice would be to try Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell first, if you plan to try any of them. The BBC are making a 7-part miniseries to air sometime in the New Year, and I'd definitely advise reading the book first!

Your love of The Sunne in Splendour was what got me to pick up a copy of it, and I'm so VERY glad I did because I fell completely in love with it. And it was around the time, last year, when I was starting to... rediscover the things I used to love and yes, it help re-kickstart my passion for history.

I don't ever know if I said THANK YOU but... thank you <3

Oh, that's so lovely to hear, thank you! I often think word-of-mouth and recommendations from friends whose judgement you trust are the best ways of finding new things to read, far more so that critics' reviews. So I'm glad my reviews help, and I'm glad you loved The Sunne in Splendour as much as I did!

Conroy's writing is amazing, but holy hell, I must have thrown Prince of Tides across the room more times than I could count. (The tiger scene alone, seriously, what the hell.) But you are right that he captures the South in beautifully florid fashion. He's much like Tennessee Williams in that way.

And agreed on GWTW. Yes, I realize it's a problematic book, but it's a really fucking good story with really interesting characters.

I've read Gone With the Wind, Jane Eyre and Prince of Tides and I agree they are wonderful choices. I've read Jane Eyre a number of times since that first time in jr high. I still love it. When I went to England a number of years ago, one of my favorite parts was when we went up to Yorkshire for the day and I got to see the moors. I read Gone With the Wind after reading The Outsiders and how the one character read part of it to his friend. The Prince of Tides, I admit I read it after seeing the movie. I'd already read several of his books but my favorite of those was The Water is Wide.
