A caveat before I begin. I have absolutely no idea what to make of this episode. None. I can't decide if I loved it or hated it. I can't decide if it was dreadful or sheer genius.
At the moment the fangirl side of me is warring with the more discerning television viewer in me, because obviously the fangirl LOVED all this stuff. John and Sherlock being open in their affection for each other, hugs, drunken nights out, admissions of love and devotion? HELL YES.
But at the same time, I don't expect this kind of stuff to actually be in the show - that's what fandom is for! And to put it in the way they did, to hinge an entire episode around the wedding and their relationship, as much as I loved it, it's not what the show is about. It really did feel like fanservice, and that's great for fans, not so good for quality television - and if this is the way they go, I worry for the show's future quality.
But if by the next episode it's back to normal Sherlock-mode then...what was all this? How can you go from this to Sherlock being, well, Sherlock?
Being in the US, and unwilling to illegally download TV shows, I haven't seen these episodes yet. But, I've followed your posts, so know what's going on. Were the writers for this episode and the previous one the same? Were the writers too rushed, and cut corners? I thought I'd read/heard that they had to film during a break in filming while filming "The Hobbit", but that could have been the previous season, and not this one
( ... )
No, it was S2 that was filmed in between Martin's stints out in New Zealand filming The Hobbit. Of course, I don't know what the timing was like for Benedict and Martin's other projects, but I wouldn't have thought they'd have rushed things. They'd been off on a two-year hiatus so a few extra months wouldn't have made much difference!
And yep, there is going to be another season. Two, so far as I've heard. And both Martin and Benedict have said they're quite happy to keep doing them, so I think we're safe up to S5 so far!
I guess I just think that having off-beat or slightly off-the-wall episodes works better with a TV series where you have more episodes, where you can fit in slightly weird episodes amongst the story arc episodes. When you have only three eps, and so far neither of the two that have aired have really involved much in the way of mysteries or detective work, and that's worrying in a show about Sherlock Holmes!
