Joss, you've let me down...

I think I'm about ready to give up on Agents of SHIELD. Much as it pains me to say it ( Read more... )

All the characters in SHIELD just seem so cookie-cutter, you know? Like cardboard cut-outs.

This! In his other shows, his characters were *individual" characters. But with this emsemble, not so much. You've got the Action Hero, the Wanna-be Buffy/Faith/Echo, the Amusing Science Nerds, the Papa Figure. And the Mama Figure (although May would probably track me down if I called her that to her face ;)).

So disappointing ..

I think May would totally smack you around for that. ;)

But she's the only character who didn't come straight out of the Young Writer's Guide to Character Tropes. And for someone who has created so many awesome, memorable characters, it surprises me in Joss.

OMG YES. Someone on my flist described Coulson as the Horatio Caine of SHIELD and they're not wrong. He feels like a caricature of himself. And don't get me started on FitzSimmons. They are so annoying. There is such a thing as taking the scientist/nerd trope too far and they're definitely there. May is definitely the one exception. She's the only character that makes me want to find out more about her.

A caricature of himself is the best way to describe him. Like it's someone playing Phil, not Phil himself. Or Phil trying to be some kind of uber-cool Phil to try and fit in with all the superheroes and spies.

I kind of suspect its "Like it's someone playing Phil, not Phil himself" if the rumours about him turn out to be true. Which will make me a sad puppy, because I loved the Coulson we got in the movies. :-(

I was so looking forward to it, and with Joss at the helm and studio backing, it felt like...how could it go wrong? And yet it's just so dull and clunky and heavy-handed and stereotypical...

Yeah, we watched 3 eps and quit. Tbh I feel it's been a LONG time since Joss was on top of his game.

I guess I haven't really watched anything of his (TV-wise at least) since Buffy or Firefly. I never watched Dollhouse and I stopped watching Angel a few seasons from the end, so maybe nostalgia is rose-tinting my glasses a little bit.

Dollhouse was so awful. The premise was interesting, but it ended up being tacky and exploitative. Do not like!

I guess I went into it with really low expectations. So it didn't exactly impress me, but I did like the style they came up with for the first ep. Now having just seen the 5th ep tonight, it is quite boring but I still like it a bit. Also Skye reminded me of Echo but she actually impressed me more than I expected, I found her with more depth (relatively) than Echo which was the only thing that kept me going beyond ep 3. And I'm really hanging out for the reveal for the Coulson thing, why is he such a caricature of himself now? They seem to indicate something, and if its a let down I will be so annoyed, because otherwise the single ep plots a pretty hum drum. :/
