Uh, I actually...was really impressed by and enjoyed that episode. I mean, obviously Ned's death is a huge emotional "ouchie" and all, but I was always far too into the world and the entire tapestry of the story to really think of anyone as "the main character". Even Ned. Besides it was established as a show where anyone was fair game for mortality pretty early on, I thought.
IDK. Mileage may vary, obviously. For me when the pilot ended with them throwing a child out a window (and just about everyone I know who saw that episode, including myself, came away at that point more or less assuming Bran was dead) I prepared myself for just about anything. Ironically perhaps I almost find it a refreshing change of pace from other self-proclaimed "anyone can die" shows where the character deaths are in fact incredibly formulaic and predictable. Battlestar Galactica, for example, up until the very last few episodes still left you with the sense the entire credited cast was relatively safe. It's hard to straddle that line between "oh sure, let's kill all of the characters" and "thank you for keeping this actually interesting and compelling", but I feel that I'm there with the show.
Simply put, I wish that if Ned was going to die before the first season was over-- they should have cast Sean Bean (their best actor by far) as someone else.
I really appreciate how you've been keeping spoilers under a cut because it's been amazing watching stuff without knowing exactly what's going to happen. The finale should be fantastic.
