I enjoyed myself. I thought the system had good potential for a mid-length campaign.
I also agree that the system could be more loosely applied or altered to get a more pulpy vibe. At its heart though, like with HEX, I do think its a little gritty than it should be for the genre its trying to emulate. Not insurmountably so, but noticeably so. Style points should do a little more in particular which you already picked up on.
I found that even after my own read through of the system mant years ago, I could apply it lightning fast in play which is promising.
In regards to the Social combat question - yep there are. However they are mainly aimed at two gentlemen throwing insults, rumours and insinulations at each other. The effects are pretty minor as well.
That said, it is good that they've included what s an important part of the setting/genre mechanically!
