For those of you who aren’t locals down here in Wellington, I draw your attention to Luke’s Actual Play session of Mouse Guard - http://grandexperiment.livejournal.com/19325.html

I own a copy of the pdf with a physical copy winging its way to me at some point (!?!). After my first ( Read more... )

Don't be too persuaded - Luke's a great seller of games that he's currently enthused about. :) I recall the fuss he made when nWOD came out - a game he'll have nothing to do with now (and rightly so, it's a terrible game from the ground up. But still... there was that initial hard sell. :) )

FWIW, I am interested to try MG, but like you, I find the mechanics of story/indie games more intrusive than helpful, and Luke's not quite persuaded me that in MG they're less annoying than in any other game of similar ilk.

Shame you don't live up this way, Mash, as otherwise I'd invite you around for a test session (my wife, Emma, would be keen to play).

I agree proof's in the pudding. MG is proving itself to me but you need to play it to determine whether it works for you.

As to nWoD, I disagree that is a terrible game from the ground up. I think it is one of the best designed traditional RPGs to date. My beef with it, and the reason I won't go near it, is that all of the splats were universally disappointing to me and ultimately destroyed what I liked about the core rules.

A little off topic - but I really like the feeling of nWoD... a little more horror, with a little less brooding and angst.

Not so impressed with the rehashed formula it uses in game structure, however. Then I've no actually ever played it!

Then again I wouldn't listen to me too much, my idea of an adequate game system is BRP :P
