I'm having trouble with the idea that Alfred might be mortal. Isn't he just Awesome made flesh? Or ink, whatever. Batman needs Alfred. Who else is going to wash the blood out of his costume, sew his cape, bandage his wounds, arrange Bruce's life so he can keep his secret identity intact, remind him that even Dark Knights need to eat and sleep, and give him a well-deserved verbal smackdown when needed?
Maybe it's a future AU. A scary AU where Alfred doesn't defeat death through the Power of British Butler-ness.
Even if it is a flash-forward thing, I want no part in it. I just can't get my head around Alfred not always being there. He's *Alfred*. And this is frickin' comic book - nobody gets old, nobody dies (permanently).
Though, I suppose, you could make Jay Batman, and I could maybe live with that if I still had Nightwing. But Alfred is the key - he has the snark and the love and AWESOMEBUTLERSMACKDOWN!
:(
(A thought: I'm going to be in Canada around August/September/October 2009. I will be travelling for two weeks around and about - in which place do you live, and would you like to share part of my journey?)
2009? Unless I move before then, which would most likely only involve a different place in the city or in a city nearby, I will be here in Hamilton, Ontario. (Not the best city in the world, but very close to Toronto.)
I *think* (and that's a big stretch) that the issue is set in the future or something, way after Bruce is dead, or something... I don't like the idea of Alfred dying, but what I can't just see is Bruce having to survive Alfred... it will be a cold reboot, anyway, so we'll get Alfred back soon enough!
I know, Alfred is just one of those characters that you can't take out the picture. Only thing that can take Alfred out is the end of times, or something! and even then, maybe not. I'm hoping for the best, even if comics lately have been.. not the best in that kind of thing.
(I'm doing good! attempting to get back in the fandom wagon after my trip, but it's not easy...)

Though, if the Didiot pulls it off, this may make him officially worse than Joey Q. Maybe that's the point.
