Riot? What Riot?

Right, now that I've finally worked out what's going on...

Here is the official post

In summary, Livejournal have declared that *all* depictions of sexual activity amongst under-18s - including fiction and art - are not allowed on their servers. The result? Fandom appears to be upping and leaving. It doesn't personally affect me (I think...) and I ( Read more... )

I know! I was thinking the exact same thing during Strikethrough.

But anyone who's been around long enough and is big enough in fanfic has written everything at some point. And when all the big name fen leave, where's the fandom going to be?

I'm also hoping against hope that shoebox_project dips delightfully under the radar. And that batknights doesn't get hit (though it shouldn't) until drvsilla gets back from holiday.

*breathes*

Sometimes, I think we were all much better off on Yahoogroups.

I know. They're all technically underage. Let's not even talk about Bart...

So much for a Happy Potter weekend.

The link does not work for me. Has the post been deleted?

You'd think after their last purge, they'd think very carefully before making this decision. Especially since a lot of the writers are under 18 themselves.

Never mind, I found the post. I don't think fandom will be targeted. They claim they don't go hunting for violations, so someone has to report the journal, and then it will be reviewed, and hopefully they will give warnings before mass deletions. The focus seems to be on "illegal in the US" and "child abuse," so some of the Harry Potter stuff may be in trouble (student/teacher 'ships are statutory if they aren't future fics), but it isn't illegal for two 15 year olds to have sex.

I'm annoyed at how they are going about this though. The TOS doesn't seem to be changed (it does say no law breaking or harming minors, but nothing specific), and lj_biz is not listed on the LJ "site news and updates" page with the other news journals, and none of this is linked on the homepage. They also don't seem to have clarified the main questions of users.

Hopefully the last fuss will have taught them, and they'll be more careful and consistent this tima.

You'd certainly hope so, but they may have knee-jerk reactions.

I'm hoping for a favourable outcome, but in the meantime, fandom's jumping ship.
