People who just say "oh, shut up" or "just do something about it" have obviously never worked - it's not just a matter of quitting if you hate a job. And they don't get that we can't afford medical expenses all the time - if someone is more independent, it's a matter of priorities so going to the doctor might have to fall a couple of rungs.
The pains you have sound like what my mother had when 500+ lbs of plywood fell on her a few years back. She had really bad aches in her neck, and judging from where she described, she said they were at the base of her neck, and they were sharp pains that would often turn into headaches.
I don't think the cause is quite the same, but my guess - if you two are having the same thing at all - is that it could be that the discs in your cervical spine might be degenerating. Here's what I found online:

If you can, do you think it's possible to let yourself soak into a tub of hot water? (You can make it up to the environment later.) Doing that might do wonders for your muscles, relaxing them and (I would hope) perhaps making the pain easier to bear. That, and a warm bath tends to make just about any pain go away. ♥
