I think the site that you're thinking of that replaced Friendster is My Space. It's good for bands, and you can download music from them as well (Steven is on it with Cult of Sue Todd), but I heard something about Rupert Murdoch purchasing the site (????) from an article in the Chronicle, so I don't know, since I don't use it myself.
