The silence previously borne from the solemnity of the occasion was not cut, but wafted from the room for the sound of that familiar voice. Familiar, but different from that to which Valeria was accustomed to hearing in a way that pierced her consciousness and tempted her to turn black eyes from the dark in which she sat to the light, to white stained with rusted crimson and pale, distant faces that she did not know. Should not know, should not be so inclined to trust ( ... )

She had been sleeping for some time. Her body lay still, except for the even breathing as her chest moved up and down, the occasional wheeze growing more and more scarce. Every good shadow knew when and how best to stretch, to become that place between light and dark, and Valeria was no exception. She moved with a grace befitting of a Turk, rising from her place seat in the corner with some reluctance. Not now, not while she was in this state ( ... )

The sensation of his fingertips tracing the rougher spots on her palm and her own fingers was slightly nostalgic. And in that instant, she could not help but swallow, her mind fleeing to forgotten memories, moments when her brother would gently point out the subtle physical changes developing as she grew into her own and became a soldier... and a woman ( ... )
