Do you enjoy creating your own mental images of the characters? I was disappointed by most of the cast, as they absolutely didn't fit my idea of how they should look, but if you see the movie first then you might end up being stuck with that cast once you get around to reading the books. On the other hand, yeah, adaption decay is always a source of great frustration.
The trailer looks great though, to my pleasant surprise:) I'm really looking forward to it now, whereas before I couldn't muster much enthusiasm.
I guess I'd ultimately advise you to see the movie first.
/I, btw, loved book 1 but found 2 and especially 3 very disappointing) *appropriate icon is appropriate*
I'm normally quite good when I read the books after, in regards to the characters. My imagination's so vivid the characters in the book are really strong in my mind - so if my idea of the character is different from the film I won't get stuck with the film version in my head. Even when I read the book my mind generates a different image of the character from the get-go.
Thanks so much for your advice! I think I'll probably see the film first :D
You made an excellent point in the comment below re: first person POV in the books and open POV in the movie. It didn't even cross my mind until you mentioned it, but I just realised that I would have been disappointed to discover how little we actually get of the other characters if I saw the movie first. That's such a strong argument against following my initial advice that I think I might be changing my mind on that score.
The third book had such a politically themed plot line, which is something I in most other circumstances would have considered a good thing. However, Katniss' first person POV really didn't work for me in that setting.
I'm not sure really. the thing about the books, is that they are very much a first person story.
We see everything from Katniss pov, to me this pov enhances the story, because we only see and know what Katniss knows.
Yet from what I've heard, for the movie, they've opened up the pov, as the trailer might show you, they also show the other characters reactions to the games.
So in this case, I think it might actually hurt your enjoyment of the books if you've already seen what's going on with the other characters, which isn't shown in the books.
