I found this on LGBT laughs (EPIC tumblr btw, y'all should check it) and I believe it is relevant to our interests.

This actually addresses something I've been going through.

I'm a lesbian in a het dominated fandom. I'm a Senshi/Shitennou Sailor Moon shipper. (Yes, life might be easier if I could focus on Michiru/Haruka, and I do LOVE them, but Ami is the Senshi I most associate with.)

The group that I belong to totally accept and love me, but I also know they have a harder time with my stories because I make Zoisite female. I do this specifically because I want to be represented, because I want to be able to ship the senshi with the shitennou without having to make myself uncomfortable or writing myself out the world.

I'm sure there are some people who write slash to fetishtize it, but that does not diminish that some of us do so because we want to be a part of normal.
