Park Jin Young - 너 뿐이야 The atmosphere at the nightclub was starkly different from the stressed out kind of quietness in Changmin’s office. He looked at the sparkling colorful mass of people on the dancefloor in front of him. It reminded him that he was just a guy in his 20’s, and this was how he was supposed to spend his weekends. With friends - not in an office, working his ass off while he was just a mere university student.
Perhaps it was a good idea to come, after all. Changmin laughed at another joke made by Kyuhyun. Soo-ae had gone out to dance with her girl friends, who had been invited to accompany Changmin’s three buddies. It turned out, however, that the group of four young men just needed each other to make a great night, so here they were, drinking from the 35-year-old Remy bottle Kibum had brought.
Now, in Changmin’s eyes, the mass of colors on the dance floor had blended into each other, making a brownish, greenish concoction of humans. It only stressed the notion that, after all, all human beings were just the same. It was just hard to be different. Changmin had tried to, for example, but he just couldn’t run away from what he was. He was a Shim before he was Changmin. He had never been a fatalist but, well, after all if all people are predictable then perhaps fates are predictable too.
But right then, right across his eyes, something had just coruscated.
Changmin’s heart just stopped beating. A spasm like electricity jerked his heart and brain.
There was Junsu, sitting just about ten meters away. He did look different from how Changmin remembered him, but there was no mistake that it was Junsu. From what Changmin could make out from the dim light, Junsu’s hair was now at least a few shades lighter. It was no longer 75% cocoa chocolate colored, but something like latte coffee. It made Junsu’s profile look heartbreakingly young, as he was playing with the straw in his drinks. Junsu wasn’t paying attention to his friends, who were barred from Changmin’s view by the huge back of the sofas; in fact they were seated quite far away from each other, but Changmin had that newly-discovered ability to recognize Junsu everywhere. The guy was thinner, wearing a white shirt over skinny dark jeans, and a pair of black leather shoes for some edgy touch. It was nothing much but really Changmin had to admired how Junsu’s sense of casual fashion had clearly been enhanced since the last time they’d seen each other. Changmin swallowed dryly.
Too absorbed in the staring business, he didn’t realize how some unvoiced conversation was going on between his two buddies Kibum and Kyuhyun. First Kibum poked Kyuhyun on the side to alarm the latter of the fact that Changmin’s face color had suddenly changed. Kyuhyun had his eyes wide opened in shock when he realized it was Junsu Changmin was looking at, and Kibum needed nothing more than that to know the identity of the guy in question.
“Hey Changmin, is there anyone you’d like to invite for a dance? You know Soo-ae is not here, you can just have fun,” Kibum said in hope. Changmin turned back to look at Kibum as if the latter were some ET, and answered curtly, “No.”
“What? But isn’t…”
Kibum suddenly grimaced in pain, as Kyuhyun had just stepped on his foot really hard under the table. Changmin frowned. “What?”
“Anyway Minho where were we?” Kyuhyun quickly said, diverting Changmin’s attention.
Minho picked up right there. “Ahem, well so I saw Shindong went to the girl…”
Minho continued the account of Shindong in his hopeless romance with a new prospect girlfriend, but Changmin heard none of it. A thousand things were sweeping through his mind. Like, Junsu? What was he doing here? Well stupid question, of course he was doing the same thing Changmin was doing: hanging out with friends. There were, in fact, no real questions - Changmin simply felt struck. Only now did he realize what Junsu’s presence here should mean. He hoped Junsu had not seen him. Oh, he needed to hide. Or actually, he had been hiding from Junsu and he needed to continue it now. He needed to turn his face away so Junsu couldn’t see…
Changmin did just that. He turned his back towards Junsu. Junsu wouldn’t find out. He would leave soon, Changmin supposed. Junsu never liked to be out after 12.
During the interval, Soo-ae and her friends came back for drinks. Soo-ae made sure to kiss Changmin, but those kisses became all foggy recollections the very moments they happened.
At 12, Changmin turned his head back. Junsu indeed was not there on his seat anymore. Though having anticipated it, somehow Changmin’s stomach fell.
How could Junsu have left? Changmin felt something like regret tiding in his veins and he felt suffocated. Even if he was hiding, Junsu should have recognized him, but Junsu hadn’t. How could Junsu have not recognized Changmin? Then Changmin started blaming himself. Perhaps he shouldn’t have turned his back so radically at Junsu, because from that angle everybody looked the same and it wasn’t Junsu’s fault that the guy had not taken notice. But more than that… Why did Changmin want Junsu to see him, why was he upset that the guy hadn’t? He didn’t know. Part of Changmin had not the slightest idea how he’d react if he and Junsu met again, but when he saw Junsu no more there he just felt terrible inside. Changmin never had any excuse to go to Junsu’s neighborhood, or even to walk all the way across campus to Junsu’s department, (even if he had he’d not have the guts to go) and ever since the good-bye their ways hadn’t crossed again. Yet when he’d finally seen Junsu again, it was only for a brief few minutes and now Junsu were gone again. How had Junsu been? Had he been well? Was he still playing with the heavy-hammered piano? After Ms. Han’s death did he continue going to the hospice? When had he changed his hair color? And the question Changmin dreaded: Had Junsu embarked on a new romance? Changmin’s head burned with thoughts and his chest felt heavy like a ton of rocks were on it.
Changmin sat like a soul-less soul. His eyes were unfocused and it wasn’t long before his friends noticed the change.
“Ahem,” he heard Kibum clearing his throat, “You might want to go to the dance floor, Minnie.”
“Eh?”
“Just go.”
Kibum pushed. Changmin went like a puppet. Junsu had left.
Junsu had left.
Junsu had left.
Junsu had left.
But, oh no, Junsu had not left. Another spasm went through Changmin, because right there in the midst of the crowd of nameless people, there was that white fabric, with disco lights flashing through changing its color frequently and at first Changmin couldn’t believe his vision, so he had to rub his eyes and make sure it was really Junsu. But it was. Junsu was swaying with the music. His head ducked adorably to the side, and as usual he was mumbling the lyrics to the songs. In the middle of so many people, one couldn’t possible feel any particular person, but Changmin could. His whole body sweated. The tips of his fingers twitched, almost feeling the softness of that waist, the smoothness of the skin, the cool yet hot feeling of Junsu’s nape. Changmin felt his stomach turn. That figure, that slender figure with the full behind, was right there, back in the range of his touch. The mere idea made Changmin feel hard to breathe and he tip-toed to get near Junsu, even though in this place one didn’t have to be so careful to not be noticed. But even he himself wasn’t fully conscious of his actions. He was acting like a moth attracted to flames - it was a kind of instict that he just couldn’t fight.
When Changmin was behind Junsu already, he felt an ache in his heart. He looked down and saw the tip of Junsu’s cute button nose, and his little red ears. The cheeks were flushed and lips were red with alcohol and Changmin just want to kiss the guy senseless. It was all crazy and Changmin tried to divert his attention to other things. He tried to listen to the song being pleayed, for example. But he felt even more suffocated when he realized it was the very same singer who sang the song Junsu and he had danced to once. Only now it was different melody and lyric.
There were so many beautiful women but
Whenever I see you, this rush that I feel
I can’t find it anywhere else
Changmin stood behind Junsu in the spooning position, but didn’t let their bodies touch too noticeably. He would just pretend it was casual friction between people on the same dance floor. But hell it was not the same. Changmin looked down to make out even more clearly Junsu’s new hair color, and it was like his nose could smell Junsu’s shampoo, also his natural fragrance smelling of lilies.
Changmin was drowning in the sea of emotions, when he was suddenly turned around. It was Soo-ae, with the same big eyes and pretty face but Changmin paid no attention anymore. He just wanted to turn back to Junsu, but Soo-ae just wouldn’t let him. She had her arms securingly around Changmin’s neck and it was a position that prevented Changmin from even looking back. “No, Soo…” he said, but she didn’t hear. She leaned upwards. Realizing it was to be a kiss, Changmin had to shout, “Soo!”
He felt something at his back moving. He jerked away from Soo-ae and turned, and he saw Junsu’s teardrop-shaped eyes on him. Junsu had probably heard Changmin’s voice, and thinking it was someone calling his name (“Su!”), turned back. It was an awkward situation, as Changmin saw Junsu taking in fully the view of Changmin with a girl, closely together.
Soo-ae turned Changmin’s face to her. “Your Soo is here, what are you looking at?” and that just did everything. From the corner of his eyes Changmin saw Junsu stood there for a few more seconds before he turned on his heels and left.
Changmin felt numb in both his heart and brain, and he just didn’t know what he was doing anymore. He pushed Soo-ae away despite the pact “to treat her right” he had made, and chased after Junsu. It was so hard to get through the sea of people, but Changmin made it out of the dance floor. He caught a glimpse of Junsu’s backside, standing at the sofas where he had been at before. But before Changmin could raise his voice, Junsu suddenly squatted down, in time to catch a Yoochun who was falling. Yoochun was apparently drunk and several other friends were helping him up.
Yoochun started throwing up. Junsu were off guard at first, but he acted immediately. Not shunning the disgusting vomit, Junsu stretched his hands under Yoochun’s face to catch everything. Changmin stood there, stupefied, seeing Junsu taking care of the drunk Yoochun, and they, with their group of friends, soon left.
Changmin didn’t realize he had not been breathing, until a warm hand were felt patting on his shoulder. “Changmin, let’s go.” He heard Kibum calling.
