Changmin’s lifestyle changed radically after the meeting with his father in the family mansion.

Everyday after classes, at 3 or 4, a chauffeur would come to take him to the headquarters of the Shim corporation in Gangnam. Shim Minwoo, chief operating officer of the Shims’ East Asian division and Changmin’s uncle, kept Changmin inside his own office. He would give Changmin a mountain of tasks to work on, or take the boy around to meet with important clients and business partners.

The particular merger Changmin was working on was not easy either. Basically, the Jung family’s telecommunication company was to be merged with that of the Shims’. Such a plan by two of the largest firms in the industry was benefitting for them, as it would reduce the cost and increase the competitiveness. However, under the eyes of other firms, it was seen as an attempt to monopolize the market. At the request of a group of smaller companies, the government had even sent down inspectors. Everyday Changmin would have to help his uncle in working with the lawyers, and go meet with the irate, desperate heads of those smaller companies.

Under such stress, by the end of each day when he returned home Changmin was exhausted. Yet he’d still have to stay up until 2 or 3 in the morning preparing for classes, because both Psychology and Architecture were majors notorious for their heavy workloads.

It was of no surprise, then, that afther a week Changmin had turned into a walking zombie.

His okaa-san came by his apartment once to check on him. Seeing the miserable state her son was in, Shim Ayumi immediately picked up the phone to call her husband, asking the senior Shim to stop working their only son like a slave.

But with the most unpertubed voice ever, his father said, “I’ve never forced him to exhaust himself. He could drop one of his two majors, or change completely to something like Business. That would make his life much easier. Such life like now is his own choice.”

Changmin could even hear the contempt in his father’s voice through the speaker.

Changmin was eating the sushi his mother had brought when the call was made. After hearing his father’s words, he started to grind on the food so forcefully that blue and green veins were all visible on his temples.

There was no way he’d let his father have his way. He would do his best in the merger business, while maintaining the top ranking in all tests and papers.

So far, it seemed he was not losing touch on anything. Though, he couldn’t deny that sometimes he thought he was going insane.

One time like that was on a work day, at 5pm. People were going home to their families, but Changmin was stuck inside his uncle’s office, looking through the Jung company’s financial reports. The sound of people leaving made him feel such an acute headache that he started sweating.

Changmin glanced around - his uncle was nowhere in sight. Changmin plugged the speaker cord to his phone, deciding he would play some music.

He turned on the shuffle mode and leaned back into his chair, which was perhaps the best thing there was in the office to help reduce stress - and closed his eyes.

By chance, the first track his phone shuffled to was Chopin’s “Le Petit Chien”.

It was the piece that Junsu had once played for him. Hearing the cheerful tune, he suddenly felt like seeing Junsu. So much, like a crave that dissolved his being, to the core.

But things in reality were not like what he thought.

Early afternoon, a day in March. Changmin just got out from an Urban Designs seminal, striding towards the South gate where a limo was waiting to take him to the headquarters. The sun penetrated through thick crowns of sakura, making the sight in front of Changmin dazzle with colors: from the flowers and the water in the lake nearby, to the spots on the way he walked. The scenery was so beautiful that Changmin had to stop for a while to look at it.

Right that moment, he saw Junsu.

Junsu was in the company of some friends, among them there was also Park Yoochun. Though walking alongside, the two were not talking to each other: Junsu was listening to another guy talking, while Yoochun was explaining something to yet some others. They were holding books and piles of paper in their hand, under a shower of sakura petals, creating a scene you would probably only see in university brochures.

Changmin looked at Junsu. How bizarre. He had expected to see Junsu so much, but when it actually happened, he suddenly felt it nauseating.

In a green hoodie with comic print and a loose white wool scarf, Junsu looked cute and warm. Was it the same person who just two weeks ago was writhing needily, nakedly under him? Changmin wondered. And that person who was talking with his friends, sometimes laughing with them - he no longer had that lonely, proud air around him, that made people wary from even getting close.

Now, the first time Changmin met Junsu in that Psych class, something like an impulse had urged him to run after Junsu in the hallway full of light. He had wanted to catch Junsu, to hold him, because he was so attracted to the loneliness Junsu represented - he had reached out to Junsu like a person who had more of something would reach out to someone who lack it.

But now, looking at Junsu's and his own state: one smiling and one just didn’t have any energy even just to curl the corner of the lips, Changmin had to question himself.

Was Junsu, or was he the real lonely person? Was Junsu, or was he the one in perpetual darkness?

Changmin felt tricked. As if he had invented an illusion and now he was suffering.

Those people, they looked so happy and glowing that Changmin suddenly felt the darkness he was stuck in, so endless.

Absorbed in his thought, Changmin hadn’t noticed when Junsu’s group turned the corner and started walking in his direction. By the time he realized it, he couldn’t avoid it anymore.

“Oh, Changmin?”

Park Yoochun was the one who noticed him first. Upon hearing the name, Junsu’s head turned immediately to see Changmin.

“Yoochun sunbae-nim, how are you?” Changmin politely nodded. His eyes glaced over at Yoochun’s company of friends, but didn’t linger on Junsu any longer than he did anyone else.

“I’m good,” Yoochun replied joyfully, and took a step forward. He lowered his voice. “Heard that you are working under your uncle on the merger with the Jungs? I see your father has finally started preparing you for the position. Congratulations.”

Yoochun extended a hand; Changmin caught and shook it. Yoochun was showing his support for the young Shim, not only personally but also an informal guarantee from the whole of the Park family, once Yoochun really becomes their leader. By that, he could be expecting some future political backing from the Shim’s. It was what children of influential political families do, they form alliances as soon as when the heirs become apparent.

They stayed and talked a while about some share-able details of the merger.

Junsu remained behind Yoochun with the rest of their friends, who had for long started their own conversation to leave Yoochun and Changmin alone in theirs. Sometimes Junsu would send a glance over where Yoochun and Changmin were, and his and Changmin’s eyes would meet - but Changmin would always look away.

Finally, Yoochun tapped Changmin’s shoulder affectionately as a goodbye. Then he turned back to where his friends, including Junsu, were waiting. Junsu looked up to listen to Yoochun, and he glanced at the sight of Changmin's tall, lean back frame another time before walking away with the whole group.

That night, Changmin came home, near dead as usual. He couldn’t wait until he could crash down onto his bed and sleep like a log, as his uncle had granted him a day off tomorrow. Changmin felt so excited about it.

At least, there was still something that could make him feel excited.

Changmin casually glanced at the waiting area in the lobby while waiting for the elevator. Then, he was stunned at the spot.

Kim Junsu was there, sitting at one of the sofas.

Changmin could not run because Junsu, after a yawn, had looked around and seen Changmin. The guy stood up immediately and walked over. The white wool scarf Junsu was wearing, which Changmin had seen earlier, was hanging loosely around the smooth neck. Its soft material flowed with each of Junsu’s steps.

“Think you may want to come to my next recital,” Junsu said, not even bothered to say ‘Hi’. He took out what looked like two tickets from his bag and gave it to Changmin, “Bring Yuri-ssi along if you like.”

What? Tickets?

Changmin stiffly took the tickets from Junsu. He looked down and see on there there was Junsu’s face, smiling sweetly. Changmin felt nauseating again. Like he never had known Junsu and would never understand that person.

“You don’t plan to invite me in for some tea?” Junsu smiled when the elevator arrived.

They found themselves inside Changmin’s medium-sized apartment. The furniture inside was cream and brown colored. The light was orange and cozy.

At Junsu’s suggestion, Changmin went and brew tea. Then they sat across each other, discussing inconsequential things like Changmin’s video games collection or some paintings hanging on the wall.

It was really bizarre to Changmin, how half an hour later Junsu ended up straddling him on the sofa, as they made out like there was no tomorrow. Then they dragged each other to the bedroom, practically threw themselves onto the bed.

When Junsu’s fingers fumbled to unzip their trousers, Changmin really couldn’t think anymore.

End 13
