Summary:Changmin had never known memories could be so powerful, until he met Junsu.
Changmin walked into the blindingly white room.
So white, he wanted to put a hand upon his eyes. But he tried to resist the urge. And succeeded.
Changmin had always been known for the control he had over everything. And that, included the control over himself too.
The people present in the room looked up as they heard the sound of Changmin’s shoes on the floor. “Changmin-ssi,” the nurse greeted him. Changmin nodded, diverting his eyes to a pale, young boy sitting on the bed nearby.
The nurse, Bokyung, said to the boy, “Junsu, this is Shim seonsaeng-nim.”
The boy Junsu looked at Changmin. As Changmin came closer and closer, he had to bend his neck backwards, for Changmin was too tall.
“Hello. Call me Changmin.” Changmin offered, with a professional, warm smile.
Junsu looked down.
Then Junsu looked up again. A corner of the lips twitched, and Junsu smiled back hesitantly. It looked like a line clumsily drawn on Junsu’s face, but still a smile.
It was a good sign. It meant Junsu wanted to be treated.
And somehow, even a half-smile could light up Junsu’s face. The sweetness of it made Changmin smile become more genuine.
Changmin eyed Junsu discreetly. The boy looked quite fine to Changmin, actually. Though a bit thin, like he was swimming in his big shirt and baggy jeans. A face quite pale, but the genuine expression on it made it very likeable.
The boy had a cute button nose, eyes like two teardrops and pink, full lips. He had quite big bags under his eyes, but eyebags are quite prevalent among kids this age anyway. Entrance exams and stuff, one would say.
However, Changmin knew otherwise. Those eyebags indeed came from lack of sleep, but not because the person couldn’t find the time for it. It was because the person, no matter how hard he tried, just could not sleep.
Junsu’s case was a hard one. They had had to put him in the hospital for aggressive treatment, instead of letting him stay home and take medication like other cases. And Changmin was especially appointed to take the case. Though not yet 30, he was already one of the best doctors in this big-shot hospital.
Changmin felt bad for the boy. Such a young boy, yet already suffered from insomnia and, from what it looked like, also underweight. Changmin would rather die than to not be able to sleep or eat good food.
When Changmin was thinking, Bokyung was talking to Junsu. “I will leave you with Changmin seonsaeng-nim, allright? If you need me anytime, just push the button,” Bokyung said kindly. “Also, don’t forget to change into the hospital clothes.”
“Ne, Bokyung-ssi,” Junsu said. The obedient and sad tone added to the fragility already there in Junsu’s manners. It made even Changmin feel bad. From the file he read, Changmin had expected something different in his new patient. Junsu’s guardians had said Junsu was a lively boy who loved football, not this sad, timid one. Perhaps the sickness had made him this way?
Bokyung left the room, closing the door on her way out.
Changmin turned to Junsu, his hand flipping through a file containing a questionnaire for the patient. “Junsu, are you…”
“What is your name again?” Junsu cut Changmin off. Changmin looked up, almost thinking he had heard wrong. Calling him by his full name, without using the respecting forms?
“It’s Shim Changmin,” he answered, still quite baffled.
“That’s not a very common name.”
What was that supposed to mean anyway? It wasn’t like Changmin ever settled with common things. Changmin almost frowned.
Junsu eyed Changmin for a long time, then said, “You’re quite handsome.”
Changmin blinked.
Young people these days, really! Changmin lamented in his head. Was Junsu flirting with him?
“Ahem,” Changmin coughed, “Junsu, this is not particularly appropr…”
“But actually, you’re really handsome,” Junsu said after another minute of thorough observation, “Not like what I thought at all. I expected someone with glasses instead of hair.”
“…”
“Yes, either without or with too much hair. Last time I came here, they brought me Seungho seonsaeng-nim. Do you know Seungho seonsaeng-nim? The one with electrified hair.”
“…” Changmin regarded Junsu for a second. “Junsu,” he said, “Seungho seonsaeng-nim is my father.”
“Oops!” Junsu used two hands to cover his mouth. His eyes got wide. “I’m so sorry. I mean your dad looks like… Albert Einstein. Yes yes, Albert Einstein!”
“Don’t worry,” Changmin’s eyes traveled back to the questionnaire he had to fill in for Junsu. His dad’s hair was electrified?… that was new.
“Changmin seonsaeng-nim,” Junsu called again. What was this again? “Changmin seonsaeng-nim, would you sit for me sometime?”
“Huh?” Changmin wasn’t sure what this was about.
“To paint. I want to paint you.”
Changmin looked up at the clear orbs looking at him so innocently. They were so clear that Changmin could see himself in it. He coughed again. “If you get well, yes.”
Really, he didn’t have time for that sort of things.
“Doctor Changmin, your eyes are so beautiful,” Junsu blinked, “They are so deep, and big, like eyes of an Arabian prince. You know the Arabian Nights?”
“Yes.”
“And your lips are so special. Do you take after your dad’s side or your mom’s side? Look at the light and the color on them. I’m thinking about what color to use…”
Junsu kept on babbling. By the time he got to praise Changmin’s earlobes (“So round and full and thick! Do you know what Buddha’s earlobes look like?”), it was already 5pm. Changmin was sitting super awkwardly in front of a Junsu who was talking nonstop.
He wanted to get out of this situation so badly. Also, he had a date with his girlfriend at 6, and the sun was already setting.
Changmin excused himself, and restrained from running his way out of the room. Running would be too disconcerting.
When he had finally got back to his office though, Changmin immediately loosened his tie. He sat on his chair with a loud thump. Junsu was challenging. The worst thing was that Junsu was praising Changmin so Changmin couldn’t really be rude and cut Junsu off like he did other people.
Well, technically doctors shouldn’t be rude, but Changmin could be quite… snarky, to say the least. Yet with Junsu, he couldn’t even be. Being snarky with people when they are complimenting you is not nice.
Changmin’s tired eyes traveled to the blank questionnaire on his desk, when something suddenly dawned on him.
Shit, he thought, I didn’t even get to ask him any question about his situation.
Junsu was a frequent hospital-goer. He sure knew the procedure that doctors have to interview patients on their first day in. Apparently, he was trying to avoid it.
Changmin groaned in his head.
