LJ servers apparently moving to Russia

Apparently they used to be in California, thus subject to US law etc. No longer, apparently. It's not clear what this will mean for the non-Russian arm of LJ, but you can read lots more here, including links and directions on how to port your entire LJ to Dreamwidth ( Read more... )

technology fail, russians, stupid humans, sadness

I don't get along with Dreamwidth, but I think we can expect weirdness here. More than usual, I mean.

Just as a precaution I imported everything to a Dreamwidth account this morning and set up the crossposting option. I'd like to think things will remain as they are with regards to accounts, but who knows.

Thanks for the virtual birthday gift by the way. It was lovely!

I've had a dreamwidth account for some time, but rarely use it. All this new stuff is disconcerting, it makes me feel like there is a possibility that I'll wake up one day and find my LJ and all my friends gone.:(

I do import my LJ posts to DW periodically, but when I tried last night I noticed that it took hours for my posts to import and the comments never did. Maybe too busy over there, due to so many people scrambling to move to DW.

Well, at the very least time for another backup.

Russia is not exactly known for having a free and open media in a global context. Couldn't they move the servers to Finland instead?
