Turkey tales, and a passing mention of free books

Dec 04, 2014 23:13

So, Thanksgiving was awesome this year. We hosted it, as we have for the past six or seven years, so the house was full of food, family, yummy smells, conversation, etc. Ten people, with three of them age nine or younger and one older one hard of hearing, made for a rather high volume, but a good time was had by all. And I'm getting better and ( Read more... )

Yay - book fest!!! Where I can exercise my complete and total greed, I, uh, mean, passion for books. Well, after all, I'm getting a new set of bookcases next year and I have to put something on them...

There is no such word as "greed" where books are involved, it is an entirely rational desire to HAVE ALL THE THINGS!!!! :)

12:36pm (as I'm taking the turkey out of the oven):

My family must be the only one that eats Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at regular dinnertime (ca. 6:30 PM).

We do it early partly because otherwise we'd be sitting around until midnight (because we yak a LOT after dinner) and partly because some attendees have second families to visit as well. Also, eating early means you can squeeze in a turkey sandwich and a plate of leftovers before bed :)

Holidays will always be tough after you've lost someone. When my oldest brother died (1989), that Christmas Mum stated categorically that there would be no wreath on the front door, and she bought a beautiful corn dolly instead. She also decided that for once, she'd buy the expensive crackers.

Which is when we learned that, while the expensive crackers may look good, and may have lovely gifts and nice hats in them, the jokes are as bad as ever.

Also, *hugs*

the jokes are as bad as ever - it's reassuring to know that some things will always be the same, isn't it? ♥ you :)

I can not get rid of books. Our home is filled with books and I am afraid we are running out of space. I wish we had the money to buy another house so I could fill it up with books. It pains me to realize we are running out of room for more books. We have around 7000 books. The last couple of years I have been visiting thrift stores and buying a lot of books cheap. I can't resist a cheap good used book to add to our library. I do buy used books to give to our library used books store for to be sold. peace

I know what you mean. We have quite a huge collection too. I think we're up to around 4000 -- Terry Pratchett alone accounts for about 40 of them lol! -- but I haven't counted in a while.

But I do sometimes end up with duplicates, or I read and enjoy a book but know that I won't want to re-read it, and for those I don't mind getting rid of them if they're going to a good home. (I could NEVER just throw them out!!)

My Mom got a heritage turkey a few years back. I believe she liked it, but then stuck to the organic free range ones after that. Except for this year, when she pre-ordered everything from the grocery store because her kitchen was being painted, and ended up with a Butterball. Everyone seemed to think that was okay.

It is always time for pie.
