Free books!!!!

Yep, you heard right: it's my annual free book giveaway! I was pretty aggressive in my weeding this year, and only four ended up being rescued from the cull and put back after the second review. Go me! (Alas, the number being disposed of is still less than the number acquired, so my shelves continue to bulge ( Read more... )

What I want is your book budget

Well, it's not as big a budget as it sounds :) I worked at a second-hand bookstore for two years while I was in library school, and the owner still gives me the 20% employee discount. It's right down the street from my house, so I do a lot of shopping there, as well as at other second-hand shops like AbeBooks. Then everyone who knows me knows my appetite for books, so I get either books or a gift certificate on every possible gift-giving occasion. And finally, my mom is as rabid a reader as I am and we frequently ship boxes of books to each other (I had to check the list with her to make sure she didn't want any of them back).

So I only pay full price when I want to/choose to. Like when an author that I really love and want to support has a new title out -- I'll purposely pay full price at a regular retailer so it registers as a sale for them, and so they get the royalties (tiny as they are!). Then when I'm done with it I take it down the street and trade it to my old boss at the second-hand store for credit :)

What a lovely idea! How kind of you. I'm (reluctantly) going to refrain from taking any (one more book, and I think my floors will collapse), but you've got a fascinating range of titles.

what a lovely idea. I simply can't get rid of books for the most part. I am very sad to see you offering Good Omens, though. It's on my 'read once a year' list. *g*

I'd love Family Wicca and Men and Manners. :)

You got my address, I know. Thanks so much!

Oh crap!!! If any of these titles are available, I'd love them:

Mary Gilliatt’s Shortcuts to Great Decorating
* Bizarre Books (Russell Ash) aka “Frog-Raising for Fun and Profit” (collection of hilarious but real book titles)
Family Wicca Book (Ashleen O’Gaea)
* Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad (Jacqueline Tobin)
* Men and Manners of the Eighteenth Century (Susan Hale) (this is the oldest book on the list, published in 1898, in illustrated boards)
* The People of Pern (Robin Wood)
The Clothes They Stood Up In (Alan Bennett)
Oronookoo, or, The Royal Slave (Aphra Behn)

Thank you - I'll be happy with any one of these!!
