Pluto is cool, and it IS a planet! laurele December 7 2008, 06:58:16 UTC
I've been obsessed with Pluto for over two years now, mostly in fighting the unjust demotion, which was done by only four percent of the IAU and immediately opposed by an equal number of professional astronomers. What you should tell your daughter is not that Pluto used to be a planet and isn't one anymore but that people who study planets disagree on this, with some saying it's too small to be a planet and others disagreeing and saying if it's round and orbits the sun, it IS a planet. I've taught this to my five-year-old nephew, and he has no problem understanding it. Of course, in my family, we all have a pro-Pluto as a planet bias!
