It is absolutely necessary that I hold an active role in finding[->knowing] what makes me happy,- experiencing, learning, feeling/progressing, accomplishing, moving forth..
Otherwise = death.
I must never concern myself more with those around me than my own basic happiness, as I will only rot internally and cause more pain with the longer I accept

Amen! You know, there is something particular in Buddhism that always fascinated and resonated with me. When you are meditating on something (compassion, or health, for instance), you always visualize the healing or compassionate energy emerging and suffusing your own body, then those around you, and then the world at large. In other words, you are better able to make positive changes in the world if you take care of yourself first. I think this is the opposite of being selfish or self-absorbed. It really makes perfect sense!
