do i have venetian blinds in the kitchen! I've just spent ages scrubbing the bally things! And not even a wee, reasonable window - nope it's a big 2m x 1m window. That's a lot of narrow slats! My hands now stink of spray bleach

Wow. Do you own, or rent? That's kind of rhetorical, really. If you rent, or rather assuming you rent, will your landlord permit you to remove the venetian blinds and put up something a bit easier to deal with, such as a Roman shade? To me the worst of Venetian blinds in the kitchen would be the accumulation of a film of grease on them!
It's my flat (owned). A turn of the century, fairly typical Glasgow tenement. The blinds look right so they were a good idea at the time. Plus, it's a pain getting things for these windows without spending a fortune, and curtains jsut get in the way. They don't need done all that often, I've just been a bit guilty of putting it off too long this time.
I've got a lot of 40s and 50s bits and pieces already. Old jugs and enameled containers and things. I love stuff like that. I'd like to rip out the units and replace them with really retro ones, but that will have to wait on a lottery win :/

The blinds look right so they were a good idea at the time. Plus, it's a pain getting things for these windows without spending a fortune, and curtains jsut get in the way. They don't need done all that often, I've just been a bit guilty of putting it off too long this time.
