Someone just told me fear is part of what makes us who we are.

I'd like to believe that we're whatever we say we are.

What do you say you are, Auron?

Unafraid.

Very insightful. But I believe you forgot something.

Having the courage to confront your fears is what separates the heroes from the warriors.

Unfortunately, having courage is not necessary to confront your fears. I thought I could be a hero, once. I was a foolish boy.

True.

Dreaming isn't foolish. Anyone can be a hero.

I'm not a man who believes in heroes any more. Just people with a particular brand of stubbornness.

The question begs...the nature of the fear, does it not?

delightfulirony June 20 2008, 21:25:53 UTC
I can't guess it. I can only say that it compels us, for better or worse.

Ah, but one typically knows what it is he fears. No? What it is that those fears instill.

Fear is an illusion. Nothing changes when we're afraid, except that it makes us clumsy and irrational. If you're in danger, you'll be in that same danger whether you're afraid or not. If something's trying to kill you, it'll still try to kill you whether you're afraid or not. So why be afraid? Knowledge and caution are one thing, but fear is a pointless trap of the mind.

Not quite yet.

What is its purpose, then?

You're forthright, boy. You're thoughtful without being pedantic.

Self preservation. It's an instinct.

You remind me of someone I almost knew.

Then our instincts don't serve us. This doesn't come as a shock.

Almost is an interesting word in that sentence.

What does it change?

Kind of... the way the world looks, and... the kinds of answers we're able to come up with, and the amount of faith we're able to have in ourselves and in other people, and... how easy it is to be happy, and... how we feel about... everything.

Faith.

That's not something I have. You're lucky that you can keep it for yourself.
