reading lists?

Okay, I am curious how you guys handle reading lists. At any given time, I am roughly four years behind in my fic-reading, and I keep trying to figure out how to manage it. On the one hand, it doesn't matter; I've been around quite long enough to know how to find fic, thanks very much. On the other hand, what if something really good gets posted ( Read more... )

satisfy my curiosity, ask me about my system

I tend to keep tabs open in firefox until I get to them, unless I don't want to read the fic in the next day or so. Then I bookmark them privately in del.icio.us with the toread tag

Do you ever actually go back to your toread tag? My problem was that, for some reason, I never ever did. Tagging something "toread" was like the kiss of death for stories.

I go back to the toread tag when I really can't find something to read in other ways. It comes in most useful for fandoms that I am not actively reading in, but later want to find a good fic for that fandom. Also, I have an extension that if you go to a page on the internet that you have already tagged, it will tell you the tags. If I happen on a fic that I haven't read that has already been tagged toread, I make a point of reading it. It is not a perfect system, but I figure their is no way for me ever to be completely caught up in reading every fic I want anyway.

Hi, random here.

I was just wondering if you could link me to the extension that tells you if you've tagged a page? It sounds great. :)

So I was thinking about my theoretical process: del.icio.us "readinglist" tag feed -> RSS reader -> back to del.icio.us. It was discovered to have a fatal flaw right off the get go what with my readinglist posts always being private links, so they don't show up in RSS.

BUT. I could tag them as for:murklins and keep them private, and they will end up in my "links for you" feed, which is also private, but available through RSS with a hash key! So, um, that might do something?

Now maybe the sticking point is going to be deleting the initial del post and then making a new post, all from my RSS reader, because while NetNewsWire has a built-in post to del feature, I don't want to just edit the existing post, I need to make it show up like a new, public post so that my network sees it. I think AppleScript might do something there?

Another sticking point is that I've never used NetNewsWire and have no idea if I like it.

Hmmm. Do other people send you links? I would be afraid links I sent myself would get lost. Also, I'm not sure you CAN send yourself links. I think I tried? I don't remember. Experimentation required on that one ( ... )

A few people send me links, but not many. Not in a while, anyway. And I figure, they'd probably be on my readinglist too, right? It makes a certain amount of sense to combine the links I send myself with the ones sent to me by others.

I don't use any reader yet, so we'll see how I do. I would think for saving stuff long term you'd use yojimbo or something more like that, wouldn't you? But seeing how we have fixed you up with AppleScript for Vienna in chat, I think your system is pretty much DONE. While mine remains entirely conceptual.

I think vienna-to-pukka is good for my RL account, but not so much for fic. HOWEVER, I just perfected my vienna-to-yojimbo script, which pulls a new web archive into yojimbo, making for an offline reading list straight from vienna. It tags it "toread" but not by fandom, but I can add that shit later if I need to. That part's less important. I think I could make a smart folder that pulls in items that are ONLY tagged "toread"? Then I would know to go through and at least tag for fandom.

The del-to-yojimbo scripts are here.

Do you want... all open tabs to yojimbo? I think that's doable.
