Mabel made her way to the cafe early so that they would be sure to get a table. It was a very popular place, and she wanted to be sure they would be served. Well-a-day reaches Mabel first, but there's no surprise in that; Amaryllis is quick enough on her feet, but she's nowhere near as deft as a cat. (Or as daft as one, she reminds herself.) "Evening, Miss Watts," she says, as Well-a-day sniffs welcomingly at Mabel's shins.

Mabel is already leaning over to pat Well-a-day's head. "Good evening Miss Waithe! I let the proprietor know about our order so it will be out in but a moment; oh, I do hope you like Greyfields 1879, I'm afraid I could not afford better after the cost of the fish. I spent a good deal of my weekly budget on an extraordinary fighting fungal colony a gentleman down by Watchmaker's Hill sold to me, you see," she explains sheepishly.

Well-a-day purrs, busses Mabel's palm with his cheek.

"1879 suits me fine, mum," Amaryllis says, scoots her chair in closer. "And them colonies is something, mum. Spent all last night fighting off a vicious lot down by the Observatory, I did."

Mabel rubs back even has her expression grows somewhat alarmed. "Oh goodness, are you all right then? I have never fought one myself, only watched them be fought, and they seem to be extraordinarily vicious things for being invertebrates."
