No, I didn't finish "The Mystery of Cwmlech Manor."  No, I didn't get the proposal finished for The Dragon of Wall Street.

I am a wanker and a lazy bollocks and a dilettante.  The last time I was in Sanibel, I drafted three full chapters of a novel and planned out much of the rest.

It's the eternal conflict of the freelance artist: no vacations, no days off, no "paid leave." Stephen King always told interviewers that he took two days off from writing a year--Christmas and his birthday. Then in his memoir "On Writing," he said that he lied. He wrote every day.
Not that I recommend him as an admirable example--his assistant claims that his first words upon awakening after being hit by the van were "get me a pen and paper." Sheesh.

You're right. Maybe what I really learned is that, though there are writers like that and they are far more productive than I am, I am not one of them nor will I ever be, and I need to make my peace with that.

Downtime is very important, no matter what you do. It's those alternate brainways that kick in and give us the true meaning and benefits of synergy! Glad Sanibel was so for you this year.
