Wednesday was spent at Wendy and Brian's house, experimenting with gingerbread recipes and an old iron mould for goldfish-shaped cakes while the rest of the family labored in the rain to put up a marquee in the garden for the wedding. It does take about five days or a week to settle into being in a new place, particularly on vacation. So, next year: two weeks!

Line drying for laundry seems like a luxury these (citified) days, doesn't it.

No matter what is in a rented kitchen, the knives will be terrible. I've started carrying a cheap Kuhn knife with sheath in my picnic cooler or checked bag when I'm going anywhere for more than a few days. It's wonderful to have the right thing for fruit, at the very least.

If I were only that organized. I'm afraid I'd forget it, or have it confiscated when it was discovered in my carry-on. Which is what happened to my beloved Swiss Army Knife.
