Another Day, Another Chapter

Jul 24, 2008 08:57

Whipped Chapters 17 and 18 into shape yesterday and sent them off to Ellen, Chapter 18 very late at night. The weather is heavy and my brain feels stuffed with cotton, hay, and rags, but I'm getting there. Ellen, bless her, says I'm doing good work. It would be nice if I felt better doing it, but I'll settle for getting it done.

I hear you. My mantra right now is "I can fix it later, but first I need to finish it."

Ellen and I call this mantra, "Bang it out now, tart it up later."

The problem is, this is Later. I can tweak a few details when the line edits come through, but basically, what I do now gets published. To paraphrase Somebody or Other in Someone's "The Lady's Not For Burning": "My bud of anxiety is about to blossom into hysteria."

Sometimes the very moment of peak panic blows the hatches of the unconscious, and exactly the right solution blossoms through. As if you've been planning it all along without benefit of conscious brain activity. I've had that happen several times, and I wish it for you right now.

Thank you so much for saying that. It's just exactly what I needed to hear.

If it's passing the Ellen test, it's gotta be good.

Thank you, my dear. And you're right, of course. If it reeked, she'd not hesitate to say so. She'd be specific and give examples, too.
