I fully and wholeheartedly support (b) his paradox is what makes him interesting. I'm not a huge SS/HG fan but I see why and how it works perfectly well, as explained by you here. And that is surface still.

Oh, definitely. Snape is a fascinating character because of his flaws, not in spite of them. I really like SSHG because I feel like they would challenge one another in the best of ways :)
