Summary: Natalie and Ferrol are discussing the prospect of the camps, and Brian offers a solution to the problem.
Brian stood at the window, leaning against the frame as he stared out absently. His clenched jaw and hands were the only indicators that he wasn’t relaxed. His gut was twisting at the conversation, and he knew he should speak up, but it felt like something was lodged in his throat, preventing him from being able to.
“It’s only a matter of time,” Ferrol said, “until they send all Purebloods to the camps.”
“You shouldn’t even be here, Ferrol,” Natalie interrupted him. “If they find you, they’ll send you straight to Azkaban.”
“They won’t find me,” Ferrol retorted stubbornly. “And what about you? You’ll end up in the camps with everyone else. It would be better if you’d just come to France with me.”
“I can’t leave,” she said, not for the first time. He knew what her reasons would be. “Mandy and Kay and Brian are here. My work is here. I don’t know what to do about those camps, but I’ll figure it out.”
In for a penny, in for a pound, Brian thought. “From what you’ve both said, the whole point of this Ministry is to suppress Pureblood traditions, right?” Brian spoke up, his voice low but carrying.
They both agreed, and then he turned to them, leaning back against the window. “They’d have no excuse to send you to those camps if you were to marry a Muggle, the father of your child,” he pointed out.
“Brian,” Natalie whispered, her eyes filling with moisture. “I couldn’t possibly ask you to do that.”
“You aren’t asking. I’m offering.” His tone gave no room for argument.
“I… I don’t know what to say. I need time to think about this.”
Brian nodded. “Take as much time as you need. Don’t worry, this offer doesn’t have an expiration date.”
