Her system was on fire.
Everything about this was so very wrong. He hadn’t even touched her outside the realms of propriety, but he was going to. She needed to move away from him, to separate herself from the situation. She knew, but doing was becoming increasingly difficult.
“Blaise, please, we can’t,” she finally whispered when his lips were so close to her own. She couldn’t live with herself if she betrayed Theo that way.

Theo was gone again, and she knew she shouldn’t stay with Blaise. Nothing had happened, but it seemed like tempting fate to be alone with him.
He was being the perfect gentleman, keeping a polite distance when Theo was there, watching over her protectively when Theo was gone.
He talked to her about everything. He made her laugh in a situation where she’d never thought she’d have anything to laugh about.
But every time Theo left she knew it was only a matter of time before he tried to kiss her.
She couldn’t let him.

She wasn’t sure how, but Theo seemed to sense something off between her and Blaise. Being Theo, he asked her about it, casually of course.
“No, everything is fine,” she assured him. “He’s been a perfect gentleman.” The words nearly stuck in her throat. “I promise, Theo.”
When Theo left again that night, Blaise cuddled against her on the thin cot, wrapping the blanket tighter around her while also warming her with his own body heat.
“Methinks the lady doth protest too much,” he whispered against her ear. Her head tilted of its own accord, her breath caught in her throat.
“Blaise,” she breathed. “Please, I can’t do this. I can’t hurt Theo.”
She made the mistake of turning her head, looking into his eyes.
She couldn’t stop the kiss.
