About Ravenous: Written for a challenge, this was the second idea I got. A short, random little piece of fiction, but I’ve rarely written about someone other than Peter, so here goes.

Ravenous

The world is still and quiet. Wind moves in a quiet whisper, carrying the smell of damp grass. Animals are silent, waiting and in hiding. A lonely bird flies between the trees, wings beating the air as it stops and lands on a branch.

A recent rain has made the moss soft and moist. His fingers sink into it, his clothes soaking up the wetness, but he doesn’t care. The hunger is too great; everything else is of secondary importance.

Moving in the shadows, quiet like a slithering snake, he approaches. His stomach is aching, but his senses tell him he is near. Anticipation builds in his chest. Soon…

He can hear footsteps on the stone, hurried but uncertain. The park is dark, and his prey feels the shadows closing in. The shadows will hide the predator until he is close enough to attack, to grab her and take her away. He will be quick. No one will hear a sound.

Closer he moves, hand settling on top of a twig, making it bend until it snaps softly. He hears her steps slow down, and when he finally catches a glimpse of her, she’s looking worried. Dark eyes looking into the trees, her heart beating fast, breaths creating a cloud in the cool air.

She moves to continue, movements hurried.

He attacks, for he is hungry and she is perfect.

The horror on her face as she falls down and looks upon his face, the scream dying in her throat -

Mohinder woke up with a start. His heart was beating madly in his chest, and his stomach ached. He could almost feel the hunger, the need to survive driving him… For a moment in the darkness of the room he wasn’t sure where he was, because the dream was so real. He could almost smell the forest.

Then he looked beside him, at Mira’s sleeping face, and forced himself to calm down. It was just a dream.

An echo of a beast long gone.
