About Standby: Random little story in the aftermath of Season 3 finale, which made me crave for some Petrelli brother closeness. This is a silly little piece, but hope you enjoy.

Standby

They had been planning to have a movie night. Nathan was free, Peter had done relatively well in his latest exams and wasn’t grounded, and there was a new movie on DVD that they both wanted to see. Nathan had just got a new TV set, and until now he hadn’t had time to use it.

Peter was reclined on the couch, candy, bottles of coke, and his feet on the table, a bowl of popcorn in his lap. He kept tossing pieces of popcorn into his mouth, and whenever Nathan was looking it seemed he missed more than he actually caught. “Is it working yet?” Peter asked for the umpteenth time, another popcorn flying through the air, hitting his cheek by his nose and bouncing off to the couch. Peter shifted, his hand diving after it, and Nathan debated if telling him to keep his greasy fingers off the couch would help or not.

“I’m working on it,” Nathan responded like each time before that.

“Don’t you have a manual?” Peter asked.

Nathan waved the papers in his hand for his brother to see, then went back to consulting them. For the first fifteen minutes he had tried to make the DVD picture show on the television screen, but so far, he hadn’t been successful. Then he had tried looking at the manual to see what it was saying. According to the text and various pictures, he was doing it right.

“Maybe you should just reset the player,” Peter suggested. “You know, back to the factory settings and then try again.”

“I know how to operate a damn DVD player,” Nathan snapped.

“Just a suggestion,” Peter huffed, and went back to his popcorn. Nathan wondered if there would be any left for him by the time they got the movie started.

Nathan went back to it, checking all the cables, and then switched the channels of the TV. Nothing. With a sigh, he tossed the remotes to the side and went to sit by Peter, opening his coke to take a sip.

Peter put the bowl of popcorn on the table, moved to the floor in front of the TV, and turned the DVD player in his hands a couple of times. Then, after two minutes, he restarted it and… “Voilà,” Peter grinned, sliding the disc in and settling beside Nathan on the couch. “I told you to reset it.”

“Shut up, Pete, and watch the movie.”
