These are the Christians I just don't understand. Do they actually think that this method works? Sure, it may make people less likely to gather in the open and engage in un-Christian behavior, but it is not going to change their behavior.

Some people, Christian and otherwise, thrive on scare tactics. Some sermons and secular speeches reveal an unhealthy obsession with certain "sins" to the point that it makes the listener feel dirty. That's the point, I guess. I really don't get it. It's not like Jesus spent a lot of time point out people's sins. And when he did, he was kind about it. He reserved his wrath and condemnation mainly for those who believed they were above reproach.
