30 days of Buffy - day 8
I'm going to finish this meme, dammit, no matter how long it takes me...
Day 8: Favorite Friendship
While I'd love to say Buffy and Willow... you'd all know that I was lying. Because, really, there's no way it could be anyone but Buffy and Faith.
They are mirror images and opposites, both at the same time. Both of them, looking at the other, see the way they could have been: Buffy is constantly scared that she could be Faith, and Faith is constantly wistful about her potential to be Buffy.
This comes out in many ways:
- Faith tempting Buffy to ignore the rules, in Bad Girls and Consequences. And Buffy trying very hard to shut down the bit of her that wants to listen.
- Faith's rant at the end of Enemies, about everyone wanting her to be Buffy
- the bodyswap, with all its attending issues
- Buffy's lectures to Faith in Empty Places
The thing is, Faith's time in prison makes her mostly more comfortable in her own skin, and with the reality that she is not Buffy - whereas Buffy is still much more aware that she could be Faith, and steeling herself not to be. Hence the issues they have in Dirty Girls and Empty Places. When Buffy starts accepting who she is, the issues she has with Faith instantly dissolve (cf: their conversation in End of Days).
I love everything about their relationship, both as friends and as enemies. And they are always best friends in my post-series fic, because my brain simply won't have it any other way.
