The western sky blazed with red, gold and orange long after the sun had set below the horizon.
“It’s beautiful,” Jess commented, poking the campfire.
“Do you remember that bang we heard a few days ago?” Connor said, thinking out loud. “I think that might have been a volcano erupting somewhere. A really, really big one. All that dust in the atmosphere causes sunsets like that. They saw them after Krakatoa in the 19th century.”
“But we’re safe here, right?”
Connor shivered. He knew spectacular sunsets weren’t the only side effects of volcanic dust in the atmosphere.
“Winter is coming.”
