I applaud the excellent pacing and the flashes of humor breaking up the danger and heart stopping dread in this story. In all the tension of that rumbling in the underground this made me laugh: “So you’re willing to send your best friend to a possibly horrible death?”

“I’d do it to you,” Merlin murmured, before dodging one of Will’s hands that darted out on reflex.

In the tension of Merlin approaching the injured dragon, this made me laugh, too: “If I die saving your life then you had better name every one of your children after me,” he said under his breath.

“Not likely,” Will said, his voice cracking a little through the attempt at humour, “Merlin’s a ginormous bender, after all.”

Arthur is believably taking charge though it seems he has little control over Merlin. I enjoyed your vivid description of the dragon and the steely conviction in Merlin helping it. He and Arthur are meant for these roles whether they're willing to accept them or not.
