Just curious - Has it always been this bad? Say, when you were living there? it has been getting worse and worse since, I don't know, the 90s and then Obamacare took care of some part of it, but now they are going backward (or leaping a giant step backward)?

My one year experience with it was not good. But I did like some parts of it - actually the only bit I like was our plan allowed us to go to a specialist without a GP/family doctor referral - the rest was an expensive and admin heavy nightmare.

Do you buy travel health insurance when you go there?

When I lived there, I used to joke that I was on the Warren Zevon Healthcare Plan (named after his phobia of doctors and his famous quote: "If my dentist can't fix it, I'm screwed.") Meaning basically I had no health insurance (because all my employment was minimum wage, so I was ineligible for health benefits) because I couldn't afford it, and I couldn't afford doctors. If over the counter meds couldn't deal with it, I was in trouble

I bought health insurance too last time I went there for more than 5 days.
Have a friend (from HK) in NY now freaking out because her hepatitis B medicine (contracted via a dental practice in China, by the way, when she was a child) is paid for by a charity, and she's afraid the repeal will put even more people relying on such charities. I told her to marry my single friend in Toronto...
