Apparently it was fairly common in the days of pulp magazines to have house names credited to a series so that the author's name became part of the branding. Like Ellery Queen or Max Brand.
One thing I'll add from my research on this topic is that novelizations started as merchandise and sort of served as the equivalent of home video - they were the only way you could "rewatch" the story once the film left the theatre. They could also serve as previews - I read the Empire Strikes Back novelization before I saw the movie. Given the major plot revelation in that film, this turned out to be a mistake.
