dEFROG ON 45 #77: DON’T TRUST YR SOUL TO NO BACKWOODS SOUTHERN LAWYER

Looking back on this list, it seems that a lot of the songs I liked as a kid (circa early-mid 70s) were ballads - not as in soppy love songs with an electric guitar solo, but as in songs that told stories.

I guess I knew Vicki Lawrence sang the song because I had seen her perform it on the Carol Burnett Show. But now that I think of it, I recall DJs on all sorts of stations-AM and FM-announcing the artist along with the title of the tune. I was in Connecticut at the time; don't know if that makes a difference.

Vicki Lawrence is one hella talented lady who rescues dogs.

I can tell you in the early 70s, I listened mostly to a Top 40 station (WLAC 1510 AM!) and they would only backsell the song that just finished. When I got into radio I found out why - yr expected to keep talk breaks as short as possible to allow more room for ads and station promos, so that comes at the expense of telling everyone what songs they're hearing.

Vicki Lawrence is pretty cool. I do remember seeing her sing that song on the Carol Burnett Show, but I can't remember if that was before or after I got the 45 (or if I saw it on a rerun), but if I did, I probably wouldn't have made the connection. I wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer as kids go.
