I didn’t watch True Detective, because I don’t have cable TV.

But most of my stateside friends did. I know this because my Facebook and Tumblr feeds were full of memes about it. Especially the finale. Something about the Yellow King. Many were displeased.

We watched True Detective, though we don't have cable either (shhhh..... :-P)

I thought it was a well made show and I figured it was more about the two detectives, than about serial killers mystery (like Criminal Minds). I was let down a bit by the ending, not really because how the story turned out, but it lacked the dark, broody mood in the previous episodes. I thought it was an odd turn.

Re fans spoiling tv shows, I think BBC's Sherlock is a good example.

I think that "odd turn" was sort of the point, according to the interviews I've read with the show creator.

Anyway, I may watch it eventually if it pops up on an airplane or something.

As for Sherlock, I haven't really watched that one either. We ended up enjoying Elementary more. Sacrilege, I know.
