I don't think that gamers and geeks are as ostracized in Finland as they are/have been in the US. Me and hubby will definately tell our future children stories and try to get them involved too. It either works or it doesn't. Often kids think that anything their parents are jazzed about sucks :P We will also drag our kids to Ren faires in authentic costumes and cosplay them at Cons. I think that that part they would find fun.
It'll be interesting to see what happens when they get older, though. I suspect that they will find their own hobbies and interests. It all depends on what kind of friends they will have. It is astonishing how much influence peers have in the lives of youngsters.
When I have kids (hopefully soon), the hubby and I are definitely going to introduce them to the stuff we do. Camarilla, SCA, rpgs, all of that. They will inherit my hubby's magic the gathering collection. :)
Aww, Dee-ness! Honestly, I don't think we really need to worry about our geek children being ostracized for their (hopefully enthusiastic) gaming interests. Remember, video games have become cool, as have CCGs, and MMORPGs don't use two Ms for nothing! If our kids are going to be ostracized, it's likely going to be for things we weren't even thinking of... Sure, there will be the typical worries and all, but I doubt "That kid likes ROLEPLAYING GAMES!" is going to be a bad thing. ;D
Besides, there's always closet-gaming. ;D I'm sure we all know a few who don't do it where they can get caught by the uninitiated!
I think that everything is going to be fine because of one simple, yet amazing, thing: you've got an open mind. Winnie will figure out who she is and show you who she wants to be. You'll show her who you are and probably she'll want to be like that too since kids idolize their parents. But she'll get a bit older and if that is truly who she is, she'll stick with it, and if not, with a supportive mom like you, she'll evolve and everyone is happy.
Congrats again on that beautiful little girl! Cheers!
For obvious reasons, I'm not very likely to have kids, but I'd like to think that if I DID, I'd gladly introduce them to the things I enjoy doing in life. If they took an interest, I'd be all too happy to have them join me. If not, I wouldn't press the issue.
I've always felt trying to steer a child away from something is just as bad as pushing them into it, where harmless hobbies or pastimes are concerned.
