It was shocking to read about Nivedita Hosbetkar, a young and seemingly happy teenager who ended her life abrubtly by hanging herself. Her parents were shocked at this tragic incident. They had no idea their daughter was troubled enough to take such a drastic step ( Read more... )

A few years ago, I met a very troubled woman. She was anorexic and had a whole lot of complicated issues. She did not communicate with her parents, wanted to die and was generally a bitter and depressed person. At some point I remember asking her if she's ever sought any psychiatric help. She balked at the very idea. In her opinion it was almost shameful to visit a shrink or take any prescribed anti-depressants.

I don't know what happened to her; our paths had crossed very briefly. But, I was sad to see that many people in India think of psychiatrists as almost tabboo (as compared to the West, where people talk about their Xanax and Valiums as uninhibitedly as talking about their multi-vitamin pills). I am sure she'd have been able to deal with at least some of her troubles with the assistance of a professional.

It is sad that we don't give as much emphasis on mental illness as we do to physical illness. It is so imperative that depression is dealt with more seriously especially given that it ails so many people. The west ofcourse is another extreme, but we do need to have some action in place to inform and educate people. You're right, we really do think it taboo to seek counselling or psychiatric help.

It may seem tragic, but I don't have much sympathy for such people. It's a choice they make, after all. Most people who choose to kill themselves take the decision deliberately, after much planning - it's seldom a snap decision. My sympathies tend to be with those who live with the guilt of not being able to prevent a suicide in the family, often for no fault of theirs.

It's a choice they make at a fragile time in their life that could be avoided with the right help. It's true that family / friends or even the 'perpetrators' may not be at fault but it is the victim's mind at that time that plays havoc and with help and support all of them would choose to live.

Lack of knowledge iyer_the_gr8 September 23 2005, 15:02:13 UTC
When a person (man or woman) is undergoing a storm of emotions he/she cannot do anything to come out of it. Whether its about a relationship or otherwise. Only when one accepts the situation and makes peace with it; understands and realizes that situations do not really remain the same. A storm will come and will pass. It is not there to stay forever.

This lack of knowledge is what leads people to end their lives hoping that they get a fresh new beginning when they come back again. But it is again the same. The same wheel will repeat itself. I am really grateful that I received this knowledge and am able to lead my life with it. Hopefully people in need would also pay heed to this knowledge.
