Jan 22, 2009 10:56

Each month throughout 2009, the Debs will be donating our finished, shiny new books to non-profit organizations we support.  We're combining the months of January and February and will post early February with the two organizations we're supporting for that donation ( Read more... )

This may sound very odd, but may I suggest donating books to the libraries of any juvenile detention facilities in your area? The libraries are often woefully inadequate, and age appropriate literature is hard to come by. You can create readers, who both need some kind of escape from where they're at, and a productive way to use up a lot of hours.

This has a secondary benefit of making the guard's lives a little easier; inmates who are reading are a)not bored and b)not doing anything disruptive/dangerous.

If you need any help locating appropriate facilities, I'd be happy to help. Just let me know what states and I can get you the contact information. This is a standing offer, btw, so if any authors want to do this independently, please don't hesitate to contact me.

This is a terrific idea; thanks, cbpotts. If you know of facilities in NY that might be looking for book donations, I'd be interested.

In New York, you can send them to:

Capital District Juvenile Secure Facility 24 Coed
Secure Detention
838 Albany-Shaker Rd.
Albany, NY 12211-1088

They must be addressed ATTN: Gene Terry

It would be a good idea to put in a cover letter, to let them know who they're from. Also, they accept only paperbacks, for security reasons.

Also, Women's & children's/family shelters could probably use them, and maybe also children's hospitals.

Selfishly, public libraries with teeny-tiny collection development budgets, too!

Street Angels

Sox Place (Denver, CO)

Both these organizations reach out to homeless kids, and they're ALWAYS looking for things like books, clothes, and backpacks.

Our middle school library would be psyched to have some of your books. It would help us to offer more recreational reading books and possibly book clubs.
