I've been thinking about this since reading
the recent discussion on appropriation. I can't really say what 'white culture' in America is, and it's bothering me. Here's what I have so far, and maybe the POC can help with this. What did we not steal from someone else? (lol) What makes 'white America' different from anywhere else/any other culture?
Baseball
Classical music
The Puritan work ethic
Pie
Casseroles
Constitutional representative government
Stealing stuff from everyone else's cultures ;)
I just got up and on my way to an appointment so discuss if you like and I'll update the list. If this has already been discussed let me know, I didn't see it anywhere.
ETA: Wow. I feel like I kicked a bee hive.
I am not trying to evade dealing with my privilege, I am not trying to make fun of anyone, I am not interested in putting 'white' people in some little box. I am just trying to understand what is acceptable, non-appropriative behavior.
I'm not angry, either. Apparently the list (which is obviously not exhaustive) is either irrelevant or offensive (for which I apologize).
ETA2: Okay, I get it. There is no personal cure for appropriation, other than being true to who you are and working to end racism. If I want to participate in someone else's party, I must know that I am a guest (not the main event) and make sure I'm an invited guest and not a gate-crasher. :)
