I had always said witches and vampires weren't my TV viewing - then I had Toni's 2 girls stay and they were watching a later episode, I walked into my lounge and there was this guy with bleached hair talking ... *THUD*
So, I had to back-track by getting the DVDs - so bought 5,6,7 then 2 ... then 1,3,4!
Ahh. I wonder if it would have been the same if you had watched it from the other end? I did watch it from the beginning and liked Angel but found Spike a fun and fascinating bad boy. He did change over the years and became even more interesting.
Last year, I re-watched for the whole time through in order ... and didn't like Angel!
This year I am doing so again ... and in season 1 tried hard to enter it with an empty mind (!) ... but however hard I tried to like Angel, I failed - although I did apreciate what Buffy saw in him!
"Unfortunately the character of Xander continues to further annoy me"
Very true. He's not always as nice and supportive as it appears on the surface. He can be down right cruel in disguise of a joke. I often have to remind myself that that's a character flaw which makes him more real. And I love characters that feels real, even if said characters aren't always particularly likeable. And he does also have moments of true friendship, loyalty and heroism. That balances things nicely. :)

At this point in the series, when you first watched it, did you already love Spike?

All the characters are so 3-dimensional. Love them, or hate them - they have amazing depths.
Thank you Sara - *hugs*
