Our final stop on day 1 was to Vimy Ridge - Canadian Memorial

It is a striking structure, as you can see ... at the site of one of the battlefields, first attempted by Moroccans, and eventually taken by the Canadians.

Lots of Canadian content on this trip, between Vimy and McCrae.

I actually live in Guelph Ontario, McCrae's hometown. His home is preserved as a historic site/museum, and there is a regular tea on the grounds as a fundraiser. Flanders Fields was probably my first public recitation in school at age 6.

Hadn't realised that I had managed to get the 2 Canadian ones together!

Last year I also went to the Canadian gas memorial ... and am always impressed with how the characters are so moving.

That poem is certainly moving, and being reminded that it was "just" a very personal memorial to a friend, makes it that much more poignant.
