My late father-in-law was a civil engineer and he actually planned and worked on the layout of all the roads for Legoland Windsor. Not long after it opened my in-laws had our daughter, then eight, visit them for a holiday and they took her there.
She said, when she came home, that people kept giving her grandmother strange looks because she would say "Well if I'd planned this bit of road I would have made it straighter/curvier/wider/narrower..." teasing her husband, of course, but passers-by would have just thought 'what a strangely dissatisfied lady!'
I think, more recently, the point where D-d totally captured the hearts of her future step-children (then aged 8 & 9 or so) was when she arranged a holiday for the four of them which included staying in the Legoland Hotel complete with special passes!
Actually it brought back the memory of a trip to Stoke Garden Festival back in the mid 80's. I went with a friend and her tetraplegic boyfriend. He had helped with the design as a wheelchair user. But maybe your mother-in-law should have checked, as well!
Oh yes D-d, that is truly a winning trip for the kids.
